In the past couple of years, cushion-cut engagement rings have become extremely popular among couples. The classic look and the sparkle of the cushion-cut diamond make it an excellent choice for engagement rings. One important fact that most buyers are unaware of is that there are different types of cushion cut diamonds available. If you are planning on buying a cushion cut diamond engagement ring, you should know about all the different types of cushion cut diamonds.
Here are some of the different types of cushion-cut diamonds available in the market.
Modern Cushion-Cut Diamonds
The modern cushion cut is brighter than its predecessor, with 64 perfectly cut facets. Cushion-cut diamonds blend the brilliance of a round-cut diamond with the squared form of a princess-cut diamond, and they resemble pillows. While cushion cut diamonds aren’t as bright as round diamonds, they have a lot to offer in terms of breathtaking fire, beautiful pillowy form, and lower pricing.
Antique Cushion-Cut Diamonds
The cushion-cut was invented in the early 19th century. An ancient mine cut, or a mine brilliant, was the name given to this beautiful cut. Cushion-cut diamonds originated as square-shaped diamonds with round corners. The ancient mine cut contains 58 facets in total, with 33 crown facets and 25 pavilion facets. The hue of these hefty, rounder cuts is a little warmer, and they emit lovely bursts of light. While antique mine cuts aren’t as well-designed as their modern counterparts, they’re extremely rare and have their own distinct individuality.
Cushion Brilliant
Cushion brilliants resemble round brilliants in appearance. The similarities become obvious when you turn a cushion brilliant over on its crown. The major pavilion facets, like the round, stretch from the diamond’s core to the outside edge, forming a star. When observed from the top, these larger facets form an x shape.
Modified Cushion-Cut Diamonds
This form of a cushion cut is a variation of the cushion brilliant-cut diamond. Almost all diamond cutters are fond of modern cushion-cut because they produce less waste during the cutting process. This results in a diamond with a larger cut. You’ll notice an additional set of facets in the faceting design that breaks up the basic triangle pattern and forms a floral shape.
Crushed Ice Cushion Cut Diamond
This form of cushion cut got its name because it has the appearance of crushed ice. They’re technically a redesigned cushion-cut diamond, but they’ve been significantly altered to minimize the dominance of the four core triangles.
